Book on metadata
Trea publishing put in the trade at the beginning of 2003 the work Metadatos y recuperación de información: estándares, problemas y aplicabilidad en bibliotecas digitales de Eva Méndez Rodríguez, professor in Carlos III University in Madrid. In this monograpy she studies, firstly, the concept of metadata and matters related to the
attribution of metadata. In the second part, she makes a review through the different models of metadata, emphazising some schemes, as the Dublin Core or the RDF. In the third part she analyses the relatonship between metadata and digital libraries. The work closes with an annexure of terminology, another one in which the used acronyms are developed, and a third one with bibliographic information. Highly recommended.

Library loan and copyrights in France
France have just approbed a law related to the loaning remuneration in libraries in concept of royalties. The law 2003-517, June 18th 2003, published in the Official Diary June 19th 2003, modifies the legislation about intelectual property in this country. The new law, that will have to be completed by an act, stablishes two systems to calculate the quantity that will be given in concept of royalties. In one hand, they will start with the number of users (except in school libraries) and, on the other hand, with the price of the works in shops. The beneficiaries of this remuneration, in some cases payed by the State, will be authors and publishers. We still have to know how this law is articulated and how it will affect libraries.

Collection development in libraries
It is not usual to find collections development policies in public libraries, although it would be desiderable, due to the importance of creating a quality collection. That is why we should comment on two initiatives carried out in this direction in Catalonia. In one hand, the Servei de Biblioteques de la Diputació de Barcelona has published its collection development policy in a document that can be downloaded from its web. On the other hand, the Servei d’Informació Selectiva, from the Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat de Catalunya, has made a complete selection of what must be the basic fund in a public library. Web of the "Plan de Fomento de la Lectura"
The Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte started in 2002 the Plan de Fomento de la Lectura, under which it has developed different projects directly related to libraries, above all public and school libraries. From its web it gives access to information about the plan develompment, but also to interestings educative resources, reading figures and specialized pages in the field of public libraries and books.

E-Prints in Library and Information Science documents
In November 2002 started E-Prints in Library and Information Science (E-LIS). This interesting initiative consists of a file of articles on Library Science and allied fields. The documents are in electronic formats, above all PDF and HTML, and they can be sent by any person who want to participate in the project. The searching of articles can be made automatically, through the simple or advanced searching forms. It also has a subject index, that lets check the articles related to any subject.

Reference services online
Reference services through the Internet are more and more frecuent. Libraries use the Internet not just as a great information source, but many of them are offering reference services online. Generally speaking, they are forms through which users send their questions to the library, that at the same time send the answers by e-mail. Other system more and more used, is the use of the chat. Through conversation programmes, users ask the professional librarians, who delimits the question and tries to answer at this very moment. In some countries reference services at national level online are being developed, by means of forms or chat. Library and Information Science Thesaurus
The Centro de Información y Documentación Científica (CINDOC) has published the Library and Information Science Thesaurus , that is added to those already edited about
different domains and can be consulted freely online. The Library and Information Science Thesaurus has been created por Angela Sorli and Gonzalo Mochón and it fills a hole in the professional bibliography. As usual in this kind of documental tools, after the presentation, in which they comment the methodology and the information sources used, the descriptors, first alphabetically and them hierarchically. It also includes a KWOC index, English-Spanish and French-Spanish vocabularies and a basic bibliography.

New electronic publicaton on digital documentation
In May 2003 the fisrt number of the annual Hipertex.net has been put online. This publicatión was born with the intention of spreading studies about digital information and documentation and it is promoted by the responsible of the Master en Documentación Digital of the University Pompeu Fabra. In this first number the articles have been grouped in several thematic blocks: digital hypertexts and publications, information organization and SGBD, Internet digital resources exploitation, audiovisual documentation, digital files and logbook design with Javascript.

Libraries and the Internet
The server ABSYSNET, created to give resources to libraries, has prepared in its last actialization a monogragh about the Internet and libraries, in which it makes an analysis of the Internet services that are useful in library, at the same time it studies the Internet applications in the library work. For this last thing, it starts from the article
50 aplicaciones bibliotecarias de Internet, published in the magazine Educación y Biblioteca.
