Family libraries in Vitoria

Six family libraries of Vitoria-Gasteiz Public Libraries Network (with a total of sixteen service points) are devoted to children from 0 to 14 years old, who must be ccompanied by an adult. This original experience was put into practice in 2004, with the opening of 4 service points. They have special furnitures and holdings adapted to children and materials like books, DVD, pictures, puzzles... The rules of these libraries are different: they try to create a relaxed atmosphere for playing, where people is allowed to read aloud. Moreover, the staff is specialized in children's audience, paying attention to reading promotion activities and parent's advice. The aim is to initiate children into reading beside their families.

Books and reading laws in Galicia

The Xunta de Galicia approved the Ley del libro y la lectura, (Books and reading law) last December 27th. The text was defended in the chamber by Anxela Bugallo, conselleira (minister in Galician regional government) of Culture and Sport. This law tries to establish the book sector as an strategic one, to promote reading and reinforce Galician culture. Among the measures can be underlined the automation of the Centro Superior Bibliográfico, (Superior Bibliographic Centre) and libraries networks and the increase of public investment for books acquisitions, that will be specially allocated for the future Library of Galicia.

Conferences on libraries in 2007

Several professional meetings and conferences,will be celebrated in 2007. The XIV Jornadas Bibliotecarias de Andalucía (14th Andalusian Libraries Conference) will be held in March with the slogan “more than words: the library as the motor of social change”. Speeches will be split into three main areas: libraries and community development; libraries and their users; and libraries and learning.
The 10 Jornadas Españolas de Documentacion (10th Spanish Information Science Conference) will be held next May in Santiago de Compostela. Managed by FESABID, this meeting is a reference for Spanish professionals of archives, libraries and information centres. Entitled "E-information: integration and profitability in a digital environment", points like innovation, networks, citizens and professionals in a digital environment will be discussed.
Other important meeting will be the II Encuentro Biblioteca y Municipio (2nd Libraries and Municipalities Meeting), that will be celebrated next September in Peñaranda de Bracamonte (Salamanca). The work started in the fist meeting, related to human resources, citizen participation and municipal libraries, will be carried on.

Bateginik: a collaborative news agregator

A group of municipal libraries from the Basque Country have launched Bateginik, an online news agregator showing headlines from the weblogs of all these libraries. It was started on October 2005 and shows commentaries about adults and children books, as well as non-fiction, music and films. This experience illustrates the advantages of collaborative content management systems and its easy and useful application on libraries. The coordination of the bulletin falls on the Municipal Library of Muskiz, pioneer on the use of contents syndication for the spreading of libraries activities.
